The Impact of Tourism on Petra

Over the years tourism has expanded in Petra. In the eighties, Petra used to receive tens of tourists a day. In the nineties and following the signing of the Middle East Peace Treaty between Jordan and Israel, tourism arrivals suddenly started to increase. A frantic infrastructure development to accommodate the new numbers followed. Urban expansion around Petra followed but in an often haphazard way. Many hotels were built.
